Facing History and Ourselves
Choosing to Participate -Boston Public Library
January 30th through May 20th 2008
Facing History and Ourselves and Beacon Academy partnered to present Action Arts
- Positive Change through Artistic Action a ten-week pilot program, developed by
master artist Chandra Dieppa Ortiz, to work with students to deepen their
understanding of history, social justice and the difficult decisions people make
everyday when they are faced with the challenge to take a stand in their personal
lives and in their communities.
All 21 Beacon Academy students were involved in the class, which ran from January
through May 2007. Action Arts introduces them to art concepts, studio practice,
interdisciplinary connections, and instruction in visual arts. The art produced during
this project will be on display at the Boston Public Library from January through May
2008 as a complimentary exhibit to the nationally recognized Choosing to Participate
exhibition. www.choosingtoparticipate.org
